When you work from home, you have several freedoms that are usually not available when working in a traditional office. You are able to start work when the work needs you, not when you are asked to resume (the major goal for you here is to accomplish all that you need to do for that day at the appropriate time).
Another freedom you enjoy when working from home is how you choose to dress. You do not have to wear shirts and pant or suit skirts. It is left for you to decide whether certain outfits make you productive or feel comfortable.
Also, you may switch your mode of dressing between work days depending on the agenda you have for each day. E.g. you may decide to go all corporate if you have a virtual business meeting. Even in this situation, you might decide dress half corporate and half whatever you feel like as someone mentioned in the comments below.
The following are comments I gathered from my lovely connections on Instagram and Facebook group when I asked the question “should you dress corporately when working from home?”
Enjoy this round up post filled with eye opening answers, some of which I find hilarious π Do not forget to drop yours in the comments section.

I like dressing cute because it makes me feel good and like I’m gettin’ stuff done. Does that make sense? π <3

You should dress in whatever makes you feel most confident ππΌ

That was very disciplined of you. To be quite honest I work from home as well often and I just wear my jeans (the first sentence here was in response to my own opinion)

I don’t think it’s a requirement but it would help feeling more productive and ready to work

We think casual would be appropriate. Just get out of pajamas and yoga pants and you will find inspiration!

I think it depends on what you do! If you need to do conferences and video calls, definitely need to dress accordingly, if donβt then why not get comfy? ππ
kennedytaylors
Yes definitely help me get in the mode!

I’ll say do what works best for you. I’ll go for semi casual except if I’m expecting an official guest
Vivian Kwin Etefia
Yes if the nature of your job requires video calls often else semi casual is fine

Yes, it’s what you do always that people will know you with.

I guess it depends on the day! Most days though, I am fully dressed for work. Otherwise, I am just to comfy to wanna do anything.
I work from home and I actually have a rule: never be in pajamas while at my desk. I do wear comfy clothes but I also do make the effort and change from my pajamas, I feel that this small thing motivates me and makes me more productive.
I think it depends on the day but I’ve found on the days I work from home if I don’t go through a normal routine of getting up and getting dressed that I’ll be less productive all round.
I loved this post. I work from home too. Sometimes we are so busy in our work that we often don’t dress up well. I am usually in my shorts or my leggings and a t-shirt.
This is a nice post seeing that I work from home to, I couldn’t agree more that I wouldn’t unless having a video meeting.
Ha! This is so going to be for me especially since I will be wfh soon π
Nice post.. Even I have done WFH for an year and Yeah I used to work in my PJ’s with messy hair and I so loved it.. π
These are very valid points! I think I would pick and choose my days. Depending on how the morning is going.
I think it’s not necessary, you can wear anything comfortable. π
I work from home quite a bit too and find that when I get dressed and put on even some makeup I feel a whole lot better and much more productive! Don’t worry though, lots of times I’m just like meh, I’ll stay in my PJ’s all day!
Anca.
Only during video con calls. They are such a pain to be a part of.
Pajama bottoms with a work top π only if you have to use a webcam!
I love reading everyone’s responses! I don’t technically work from home, but I spend half of my time at home with my kids and I feel like that’s a similar situation. I don’t really have to get dressed when I’m at home with the kids, but sometimes it makes me feel better when I do. When I sit around in sweats all day, it makes me feel unproductive.
Well it depends. If I have a client that I need to talk to over a video call then I would say I will dress corporate..but only up lol, otherwise I am working on my hubby’s t-shirts and undies (mine offcourse) π
Lol, there’s always freedom of dressing.
Yes, I would. I am a kind of person who think about the adverse situations before taking a step. So, for me, there could be a situation where you would have to move away from the camera to bring something or something important happens that you have to leave your desk. In such circumstances it would be better to take extra care before starting a meeting with the client.
You have a valid point. We should always be prepared for whatever might happen next.
i love the one who answered pajamas while working at home. I can somehow relate while writing blogs and articles because i believe you should be on your comfortable clothes while squeezing all those creative juices right.
Ahahaha, that’s quite interesting! At least we deserve comfort.
Slacks all day if I could get away with it π
That’s interesting. It makes the work more relaxing, true
As a ful time TL finding balance to everthing that i do is a real struggle… so thank you for this article
I am glad you find my article helpful. Thanks too!
